Knightquest is the part of Knightfall that asks what happens when Bruce Wayne cannot wear the cowl and Jean-Paul Valley takes his place.
The short answer: Knightquest is a succession story
The official publisher listings frame Knightquest around a simple but consequential change: Bruce Wayne is injured after his confrontation with Bane, and Jean-Paul Valley—also known as Azrael—takes up the Batman mantle while Bruce recovers. The story is therefore less about whether Gotham has a Batman than about what changes when a different person defines the role.
That shift gives the arc its central tension. The cowl remains recognizable, but the person inside it does not. Knightquest uses the replacement itself as the conflict: readers are asked to compare Batman as an inherited symbol with Batman as an individual’s interpretation of that symbol.
Why the edition matters more than the title suggests
There are at least two substantially different U.S. book listings carrying the Knightquest name. The 2012 paperback is listed at 656 pages and collects Batman #501–508, Batman: Shadow of the Bat #19–20 and #24–28, Catwoman #6–7, Detective Comics #667–675, and Robin #7. The omnibus listing also identifies the volume as including both “The Crusade” and “The Search.”
The practical implication is important: these are not merely the same contents in different bindings. The 2025 omnibus presents a broader reading package, while the older paperback presents a shorter selection. Checking the format and publication year prevents a reader from assuming that every Knightquest listing covers the same material.
What the change of Batman lets the story examine
1. Identity becomes a plot engine
Bruce’s recovery creates physical absence, but Valley’s arrival creates a deeper question: is Batman defined by the suit, the mission, or the judgment of the person wearing it? The publisher descriptions establish the succession; the value of the premise comes from following its consequences rather than treating the replacement as a temporary disguise.
2. The story is bigger than one title
The omnibus contents move across Batman, Detective Comics, Shadow of the Bat, Catwoman, Robin, Justice League Task Force, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, and Showcase ’94. That range changes how the arc should be understood. Knightquest is not best approached as an isolated issue-by-issue detour; its scope reflects how a change in Batman’s identity affects several corners of the surrounding comic-book world.
3. Collection choice changes the reading question
The paperback is suited to a reader asking, “What is the main Knightquest succession story?” The omnibus is better understood as the publisher’s larger answer to, “What material belongs around that succession?” Neither description requires a quality ranking. They answer different scope questions.
