Why I looked this up

I wanted to understand whether references to King Charles, a letter, and Harry and Meghan’s status described a new change—or an existing arrangement getting renewed attention. I treated the search phrases as questions, not evidence.

For this note, I checked the Royal Family’s own pages and the Sussexes’ official website. The latter provides a first-person institutional source for the California-based couple; the Palace provides the primary record of their royal role.

What I could confirm

The Royal Family’s current Sussex profile says Harry and Meghan stepped back as working members of the Royal Family in January 2020. It also points readers to their official website for information about their current work.

The Buckingham Palace statement dated February 19, 2021 confirms that they would not return as working members. The same statement says they remain loved members of the family and explains that their honorary military appointments and royal patronages would be returned for redistribution.

My main takeaway is that working-royal status and family membership are different questions. The Palace’s statement addresses both; it does not describe departure from official duties as departure from the family.

That statement is also dated 2021. I would not present its wording as a newly issued statement from King Charles.

My checklist for reading a status claim

I separated the claims this way rather than treating “royal status” as one all-or-nothing label:

What I looked into further

I also checked Meghan’s official biography, which says she lives in California with Harry and their children. That supplies direct context for their U.S.-based lives, but it is not evidence of a change in their royal duties.

The letter question needs a separate boundary. My search did not locate an original copy of the alleged new letter on the official sites checked. I therefore cannot verify its complete wording, recipients, or implications from those primary sources. That does not establish that no letter exists.

For now, the conclusion I can support is narrower: the official record distinguishes their non-working role from their continuing family membership. I would need the letter itself or a directly attributable official release before describing a new decision by King Charles.
