U.S. Passport Costs Explained: Application, Acceptance, and Optional Fees

Why I looked this up

I wanted to know what a U.S. passport really costs, because the advertised application fee is not always the final amount paid. After checking the U.S. Department of State’s current fee chart and fee page, I found that the total depends on three decisions: which passport product I need, which application form applies, and whether I add a paid service.

The biggest distinction is between the application fee paid to the Department of State and the $35 acceptance fee paid to an acceptance facility. Applicants using Form DS-11 make those as two separate payments.

The renewal amounts above apply to applicants using Form DS-82. Someone required to apply with Form DS-11 should instead use the DS-11 fee structure, including the acceptance fee.

Optional and conditional charges

The fee chart lists these additional charges:

• Expedited service: $60 per application. This is added to the applicable application fee.
• 1–3 day delivery: $23.36. This covers delivery of an issued passport book to a U.S. mailing address. It is not available for passport cards.
• File search fee: $150. Although it appears in the chart’s optional-fee section, I would not treat it as an ordinary convenience upgrade. It applies when an applicant cannot provide evidence or verification of a previously issued U.S. passport or Consular Report of Birth Abroad.

For example, my calculated total for a first-time adult passport book is $165 before added services. Adding expedited service makes it $225. Adding both expedited service and eligible 1–3 day book delivery makes it $248.36.

My decision checklist

This is the order I would use to estimate the amount:

1. Choose the product. A passport book, passport card, and book-and-card combination have different application fees.
2. Identify the correct form. Form DS-11 carries a separate $35 acceptance fee; the listed Form DS-82 renewal fees do not.
3. Check the applicant’s age. The chart has separate DS-11 application fees for children under 16.
4. Add expedited service only when requested. It costs $60 for each application.
5. Add 1–3 day delivery only for an eligible passport book. The $23.36 service is limited to U.S. mailing addresses and does not apply to cards.
6. Do not add the file search fee automatically. It is tied to the specific documentation condition described above.

The lower price of a passport card caught my attention, but it is not a direct substitute for a passport book in every situation. The State Department’s fee chart says the card is not valid for international air travel. It is limited to land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

My main takeaway is that “passport cost” is not one universal number. For a DS-11 applicant, the useful starting point is the application fee plus the $35 acceptance fee. Optional services and the documentation-dependent file search charge should be considered separately rather than folded into a single advertised price.
