What a Strong El Niño Snow Map Actually Tells Me
I wanted to know whether an El Niño snow map could tell me how snowy winter would be. The map’s dates and legend turned out to matter more than its headline.
Why I looked this up
I searched for “strong El Niño snow map US” because I wanted to understand what those sweeping winter maps actually tell me. Was I looking at expected snowfall, a historical pattern, or a comparison with an average?
The distinction became the point of my research. A map can describe past El Niño winters without predicting the winter ahead.
The key finding: this snow map looks backward
The National Weather Service’s Winter 2023–24 Outlook includes a historical snowfall map in Figure 2. Its caption identifies it as January–March snowfall during moderate-to-strong El Niño winters, compared with the 1991–2020 average, with the long-term trend removed.
The underlying ERA5 data cover 1959–2023. Blue represents more snowfall than average; brown represents less.
That changes how I read it. Blue is not a promised snowfall total, and brown does not mean no snow. The colors show differences from an average in the historical analysis.
The dates also matter. January–March is the period shown, not an unspecified full snow season. And the hosting page is explicitly a 2023–24 outlook: I’m using its historical map explanation, not treating its old forecast as guidance for the coming winter.
My checklist before interpreting a winter map
I put together this reading checklist from the NWS caption and the Climate Prediction Center’s seasonal outlook explanation.

My takeaway is to identify the map’s measurement before interpreting its geography. Otherwise, I could mistake a historical snowfall difference for a forecast probability—or treat precipitation as snow.
What I looked up next: “equal chances”
I also wanted to understand the unshaded areas labeled “EC” on seasonal outlooks.
The CPC’s Climate & Weather Linkage explanation says equal chances means the below-, near-, and above-normal categories are equally likely. It does not mean near-normal conditions are predicted.
That is a useful correction to my initial reading. “No category favored” and “normal winter expected” are different statements.
Where I landed
I now read an El Niño snow map as a document with a specific question, period, and legend—not as a standalone answer to how much snow a place will get.
The historical NWS figure answers a question about snowfall during past moderate-to-strong El Niño winters. CPC seasonal outlooks answer a different question about temperature and precipitation probabilities. Neither interpretation gives me permission to invent a local snowfall total or label an old map as this winter’s forecast.
