I found that family relationships, working-royal duties, and an official personal office answer different questions—and that the statement’s date matters.

Why I looked this up

I wanted to understand what “Harry and Meghan’s status” actually means. Are we talking about their relationship to King Charles, their official duties, or the work they describe on their own website?

For this Lookup Notes entry, I checked the Royal Family’s own pages alongside the couple’s official website. Their website provides a primary source for their own presentation and California life; the Palace pages provide the relevant statements about royal duties. I would not use one as a substitute for the other.

What I could establish

The Royal Family’s Sussex profile says Harry and Meghan stepped back as working members of the Royal Family, as announced in January 2020. It also identifies Harry as the younger son of the King and Diana, Princess of Wales.

Those descriptions can coexist. A family relationship is not the same thing as a working role.

The Buckingham Palace statement dated February 19, 2021 confirms that the couple would not return as working members. It says their honorary military appointments and royal patronages would be returned for redistribution, while also describing them as much-loved family members.

What I looked into next

I was curious whether the couple’s own website contradicted the Palace description. The Sussex homepage uses their Duke and Duchess titles and presents their official office. But the existence of that office does not itself establish a return to working-royal duties.

I also checked Meghan’s official biography. It states that she resides in California with her husband and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. That is a direct, U.S.-relevant statement from her own official site—not something I needed to infer from photographs or commentary.

My takeaway

I came away with a narrower answer than the search phrase suggested: the checked Royal Family profile describes Harry and Meghan as having stepped back from working-royal roles, while still identifying Harry’s family relationship to the King.

These sources do not give me a basis to announce a new Charles decision or assess a private family reconciliation. Before treating another “status update” as news, I would check its original statement, date, and exact subject: family, duties, or the couple’s own work.
