Why I looked this up

I wanted to understand what a “strong El Niño snow map” actually tells me about winter in the United States. Does it show expected snowfall, or does it summarize what happened during earlier El Niño winters?

That distinction became the focus of my reading. I used NOAA’s snowfall analysis and the Climate Prediction Center’s explanation of seasonal outlooks—not the popularity of the search phrase—as evidence.

This is a note about interpreting those maps, not a forecast for the coming winter or a claim that a strong El Niño is currently underway.

My main takeaway: a historical pattern is not a local prediction

NOAA’s snowfall analysis includes historical maps for El Niño winters and a separate grouping of moderate-to-strong events. Its snowfall analysis covers January through March, using data from 1959–2023 and a 1991–2020 reference average, with long-term trends removed.

Those details change how I read the colors. The maps describe snowfall differences from a reference average—not the number of inches a place should expect in an upcoming winter. Also, “moderate-to-strong” is not the same selection as “strong only.”

NOAA describes a tendency toward less snow across much of the northern United States and more snow in parts of the southern United States, especially higher, colder western terrain. But these are historical tendencies, not a promise for every location or every El Niño winter.

The physical catch is important: additional precipitation does not automatically become additional snow. Conditions still have to be cold enough.

The checklist I would use before interpreting a map

I combined the two official explanations into this reading checklist. It is my synthesis, not a separate NOAA forecast method.

This is the practical value I found in reading beyond the map title: I can identify what a graphic supports before drawing a conclusion from it.

What I looked into next: what seasonal probabilities mean

The Climate Prediction Center’s forecast-format explanation helped me separate another pair of ideas: the probability of a wetter season and the amount of precipitation expected.

CPC divides the 1991–2020 historical distribution into three categories: below normal, near normal, and above normal. Its outlook expresses probabilities for those categories.

That means an above-normal precipitation probability is not a percentage increase in precipitation. It also does not, by itself, establish above-normal snowfall. The first distinction comes from CPC’s probability framework; the second is consistent with NOAA’s explanation that snow depends on temperature as well as available precipitation.

Where I landed

I now read an El Niño snow map as context that needs its caption attached. The event grouping, months, reference period, and mapped quantity are part of the finding—not fine print I can discard.

For me, the useful question is no longer simply “Where is the map blue?” It is “What exactly is this map measuring, and does that evidence answer my snow question?”
