Why I looked up aster

I wanted to turn the broad name “aster” into a more useful gardening question: which plant would make sense for a sunny spot with a particular soil-moisture pattern?

I narrowed my reading to two species in NC State Extension’s Plant Toolbox: New England aster and aromatic aster. This is a comparison of those plants, not a claim that every aster shares their requirements. I haven’t grown them side by side; these are my notes from the university’s guidance.

My main takeaway: preference isn’t the same as tolerance

NC State recommends moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun for New England aster. Its cultural-condition fields also include partial shade and occasionally dry soil.

I would investigate aromatic aster first because the source explicitly identifies drought tolerance. I would not conclude that it needs no watering, or that New England aster cannot grow there: neither conclusion follows from the comparison.

Now change one condition. Suppose the same sunny bed instead has consistently moist, fertile, well-drained soil. New England aster now matches the source’s recommendation directly. The change in my shortlist comes from the soil conditions—not from a claim that either species is universally superior.

What I looked into next

The detail I found most useful was the difference between the descriptive paragraphs and the condition lists. A list can show that a plant tolerates a condition; the description can still recommend something more specific.

For these two asters, I would read both before choosing. My practical conclusion is modest: identify the species, compare its recommended conditions with the actual planting spot, and avoid reading “drought-tolerant” as a promise about maintenance or results.
