New England aster’s species-level height range extends beyond the assumed space limit. That distinction matters to my interpretation: a listed tolerance is not the same thing as a preferred condition. For a hypothetical partially shaded bed, I would keep that qualification attached to New England aster rather than describe both plants simply as suitable for shade.
My useful result from this research is a narrower question: not “Should I plant an aster?” but “Does this particular aster’s documented size, moisture preference, and light requirement fit the spot I actually have?”
